National Indigenous Australians Agency

The NIAA was established in 2019 to lead and coordinate Commonwealth policy and program design and implement service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The NIAA works closely with State and Territory governments, Indigenous peak bodies, stakeholders and service providers to deliver outcomes that benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Agency also provides whole-of-government advice on priorities for Indigenous Australians and takes the lead on implementing the Australian Government’s Closing the Gap targets in partnership with Indigenous Australians.

The NIAA administers the Indigenous Procurement Policy (IPP). The IPP’s primary purpose is to stimulate Indigenous entrepreneurship, business and economic development, providing Indigenous Australians with more opportunities to participate in the economy. The IPP has significantly increased the rate of Commonwealth purchasing from Indigenous enterprises with more than $5.9 billion in contracts awarded to Indigenous enterprises since 2015.
